Rome is especially beautiful in the golden autumn, when it’s still pleasantly warm.

It gets very hot in Rome during the summer, so the months of April and May, as well as the golden autumn—that is, September and October—are better for sightseeing.

Insider tips for the best views of the city

Viktor Emmanuel Monument - Get an overview first

The Victor Emmanuel II Monument is the perfect place to get an overview of the city on your first day.

After climbing the monument’s steps on foot, an elevator takes you up to the rooftop terrace. You’ll need a ticket for the elevator, which costs €12. It’s best to bring cash, as the last time I checked, the ticket could only be purchased with cash. The ticket price is well worth it, as the rooftop terrace offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the city. With its imposing columns and impressive architecture, the monument provides a majestic backdrop. From here, the view stretches across Rome’s historic landmarks, including the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill. There is no shade on the rooftop terrace, so you should remember to bring sunscreen and a hat, especially around noon. At sunset, the setting sun bathes the ancient ruins in a golden light, making this spot an unforgettable photo opportunity.

St. Peter's Basilica - A view worth earning

A visit to St. Peter’s Basilica is an absolute must on your city break to Rome. And you might be wondering if it’s worth climbing the dome. The answer is a resounding yes!

There are two different tickets available for the climb: one for the walk-up and one for the elevator. I opted for the stairs. Whichever you choose, you should know that even with the elevator ticket, you won’t be able to avoid a good portion of the stairs! The final part of the climb can only be done on foot through narrow passageways. The dome consists of an inner and an outer dome. After the first section, you’ll enjoy the view inside St. Peter’s Basilica. This view is already very impressive. But this is where the challenge begins—you enter the inner dome, and the paths get narrower and narrower. Once you finally reach the top, you’ve truly earned this phenomenal view!

Colosseum - A souvenir photo with the perfect postcard view

What better backdrop for a souvenir photo than the majestic Colosseum—the symbol of Rome? This ancient amphitheater, a masterpiece of Roman architecture, captivates visitors from all over the world with its imposing presence and rich history. Whether by day or by night, the Colosseum exudes a timeless beauty that captivates everyone.

Personally, I particularly loved this popular photo spot with its breathtaking nighttime lighting. The scene, when the Colosseum is enveloped in a warm glow and the surroundings are bathed in a mysterious atmosphere, is simply unforgettable. It’s the perfect moment to capture the beauty and magic of this iconic structure and preserve it for eternity.

When you visit the Colosseum, be sure to explore the surrounding viewpoints to discover unique perspectives. From these elevated vantage points, you can not only admire the Colosseum in all its splendor but also enjoy the panoramic view of the city of Rome.

The most important travel tips for your trip to Rome

  1. Probably the most important travel tip: Make sure to allow plenty of time!
Rome has an incredible number of sights, and you can spend several hours at most of them. Ideally, you should spend at least 5 days in Rome to experience the city in all its glory and avoid feeling rushed. This will give you enough time to explore the ancient ruins, stroll through the charming alleys, and enjoy delicious Italian food.
  2. Have a plan!
Choose the sights that interest you most. Then check the opening hours and book your tickets online in advance. This will help you avoid long lines and make the most of your time, ensuring you get the most out of your stay. Also, be sure to plan enough breaks to soak up the city’s atmosphere and make spontaneous discoveries.
  3. Make sure to wear appropriate clothing when visiting churches!
For both St. Peter’s Basilica and other religious sites, shoulders and knees must be covered. Please note that entry may be denied if you are not dressed appropriately. However, you can often purchase a shawl or similar item on-site to meet the entry requirements.
  4. Choose a central location for your accommodation!
Staying near the main attractions makes it easier to explore the city and saves you valuable time on travel. It also makes it easier to return to your hotel to rest or drop off your purchases before continuing your exploration.
